TEMPORARY MUSEUM is a new, mobile exhibit concept for urban landscapes in development, specially focused on people age 4 and up.
This summer Temporary Museum will touch down in one of the most distinct vacant office buildings of the Netherlands: the former Shell tower (Tower overhoeks) on the bank of the Amsterdam IJ. Per the 29th of June till the 23rd of September 2012 Temporary Museum will present an exhibition here, with remarkable art and design objects that refer to the culture of sustainism. Not only the practicality of everyday sustainability (such as energy efficiency and sorting waste) will be on display, sustainability will also be placed in the context of the human imagination.

For example think of a knitting machine that runs on wind energy by Merel Karhof, Dutch still-life paintings made of recycled plastic by Richard Kuiper and the speculative research by Arne Hendriks on shrinking the human race to solve the energy and food issues of the world.

In Amsterdam alone there is 1,3 million square meters of office space that has been empty for over a year. Tower overhoeks is an important Amsterdam Icon and symbol of the vacancy. TEMPORARY MUSEUM will revive (a part of the) building this summer and give the tower – concrete and symbolically- new energy through a large number of artworks. Artists and designers have made original suggestions on how to generate energy or how to deal with trash and production surplus, and asking the viewer to participate in the matter. True ‘greenies’ as well as artists and designers that are new to this theme were asked to contribute. During the three months of her temporary ex- istence the exhibit will grow toward her end form.

TEMPORARY MUSEUM is the continuation of Façade, a previous project of
60 Layers of Cake Foundation where art was displayed at construction areas.
With TEMPORARY MUSEUM the exploration on the apparent juxtaposition of tem- porality (of locations) and sustainability will continue.
